Salmon Fishing Imprimer cette page Envoyer cette page à un ami

Salmon FishingPhoto: Marc Loiselle

The Gaspésie is a haven for fishing enthusiasts. A vast quantity of crystalline salmon rivers run everywhere through the Gaspésie.

In Québec, generally anadromous Atlantic salmon sport fishing takes place from June 1st to September 30th. For salmon fishing, you must have a salmon sport fishing licence and have obtained a right of access. There are two types of access to salmon fishing sectors on rivers: open access (no limit on the number of fishermen) and limited access. To obtain a right of access, contact the river operator for information on terms and conditions.

Each year, the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la faune (MRNF) issues a publication on the main salmon fishing regulations. Consult this guide at www.mrnf.gouv.qc.ca to find out more about the fishing zones, allowable catch and size limits as well as the mandatory or voluntary catch-and-release practice.

A licence is mandatory in order to fish and hunt in Québec. Licences are available from autorized dealers (sporting good shops), at hunting and fishing sites (verify by phone). The Ministère des Ressources naturelles de la Faune et des Parcs du Québec publishes a series of guides which describe the regulations and the many possibilities for hunting and fishing in Québec (also available at permanent tourist information bureaus).  For any information regarding regulations, toll-free in Québec: 1 866 248-6936, (418) 521-3830 (outside Québec) or www.mrnf.gouv.qc.ca.

An exceptional site
For many years, the Matane River has been known as the salmon fishing school in Québec. Many fishermen have caught their first salmon on this river. The Matane River is easily accessible on all its length.

Observe a natural phenomenon at the dam Mathieu-D'Amours
From the coast of Greenland passing through the St. Lawrence River to the mouth of the Matane River, the Atlantic salmon travel this long journey with the sole purpose of reaching its spawning place. Two windows give you the opportunity to observe this anadrom fish at the time of its migratory pass through the fish ladder. And through different displays, it is possible for you to discover a magnificient river, populated with the king of fish: the Atlantic salmon.
