At the heart of the Gaspé Peninsula, the Chic-Chocs Appalachian chain is the very backbone of this forest-covered peninsula. Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs lies adjacent to Parc national de la Gaspésie to the east. A part of the reserve is even surrounded by this park. This geographical location, at the periphery of a protected territory, makes the reserve a favorite site for wildlife.

43 lakes, several streams and rivers, where you can find brook trout (speckled trout) and lake trout (salmon trout). A large variety of mammals frequent these territories including moose, black bear, snowshoe hare and porcupine; the reserve is also home to the spruce grouse and several species of singing birds.

Recognized first and foremost for its exceptioally rich wildlife, Matane Wildlife Reserve offers a breathtaking panorama combining mountains and deep valleys criss-crossed by numerous watercourses. The geomorphology of this setting is characterized by a rollong lanscapes to the south, whereas at the center of the peninsula, the landscape becomes more marked and more arid as the impressive chic-Chocs range rises up.Several novel activities have been introduced to promote a better knowledge of the moose: interpretation center, guided tours and outings in various wildlife habitats, observation towers...

38 lakes and several rivers including Cap-Chat and Matane, as well as numerous streams where you can fish brook trout, lake trout and Atlantic salmon. In addition to the large concentration of moose, the reserve is home to white-tailed deer, black bear, fox, coyote as well as several small mammals. There are more than 150 species of birds including the golden eagle, pileated woodpecker, ruffed grouse, spruce grouse, osprey and the bald eagle.

Located in the heart of the Gaspé Peninsula, the Chic Chocs Mountains are the ultimate continuation of the Appalachians. The Mont Jacques-Cartier (1,268 metres), Mont Albert (1,154 metres) and several others invite you to experience the Great North by discovering the arctic-alpine flora or by watching caribou. At low altitude, the boreal forest has one of the highest moose densities in Québec. With its 140 km of trails, the Parc national de la Gaspésie is the ideal place for hikers of all calibers. Fishing, canoeing, and several picnic areas also add to your stay.

 

The park is open year‑round; however, some activities and services are provided on a seasonal basis. In the winter, skiing and snowshoeing excursions take place in a magical setting characterized by abundant snow. In the summer as in the winter, long excursions over several days in the backcountry allow you to discover sectors that are less traveled. A large variety of types of lodging are offered: campgrounds, cottages, shelters and the very renowned Gîte du Mont-Albert. This four-star inn offers comfortable rooms and cottages whose atmosphere encourages relaxation. The fine regional cuisine has, for that matter, greatly contributed to making it famous.

Educational and amusing activities, the permanent exhibit and the audio-visual displays allow you to come into closer contact with the natural environment. Centre Schedule: mid-May to mid-October, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. During peak season, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. End of December to mid-April, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission: an admission fee is requested of all park visitors. Reduced rates for groups, youths and families. Admission is free for children under the age of 6 and for some organized youth groups. Annual passes are available for the park or for the Parcs Québec network.

Winter activities
The Parc national de la Gaspésie is well known for the multitude of outdoor activities available, such as snowshoeing, long or short distance cross-country skiing, telemarking, snowboarding and mountain trekking (mountain downhill skiing). Lodging available in the heart of the mountains, at the Gîte du Mont-Albert, in one of the many chalets, or in different shelters available along the long-distance cross-country ski trails. A visit to Forillon National Park is sure to be a unique adventure. Discover the flora, geological formations, and the astonishing fauna of this land replete with natural riches. It is on the basis of these natural features combined with a rich human and cultural history that the park theme L'harmonie entre l'Homme, la terre et la mer (harmony between man, the earth and the sea) was developed.

Forillon National Park is open year-round. A network of over 70 kilometres of trails leads hikers through magnificent sea-scapes and mountain views. Activities allowing you to appreciate the park include snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming in the sea or in a pool, excursions, sea kayaking, biking, horseback riding, tennis and picnicking. In winter, visitors can try cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter camping. You can watch seals, whales, black bears, porcupines and many species of birds. Take part in the many educational activities proposed by naturalists, and visit the interpretation centre where an exhibit will introduce you to the most significant features of the park. Visit the Grande-Grave heritage site, where the Hyman & Sons store, the warehouse and the Blanchette house reveal an unforgotten past.

It is possible to stay at Forillon, in one of the 367 partially serviced campsites (reservations: 1 877 737-3783 or www.pccamping.ca), group camping facilities, or in one of three wilderness camping areas.
