The distinctive and multicultural qualities of Gaspésie will surprise and charm you. The history of the region begins with the First Nations people who have lived on this land for thousands of years and who witnessed the arrival of Vikings and Italian explorers as well as Basque and Breton fishermen coming across the waters of the St. Lawrence.

Then in 1534, Jacques Cartier landed on these shores and "discovered" what would become Canada in the name of the King of France.
Over time, a series of new arrivals set foot in Gaspésie, including the French, Acadians, Loyalists, Bretons and Basque, all of whom made this region their new homeland. These settlers eventually also included immigrants from England, Jersey Island, Scotland and many other places.
The region's mosaic of ethnic groups has created a wonderful mix of traditions, cultures, culinary delights and colourful accents.
The region's fascinating history is presented in museums, interpretation centres and historic sites, all of which give you the opportunity to delve a little deeper into the lives of local First Nations people and pioneers.
