This centre tells the tale of the first road – called the Kempt Road in honour of the governor of the time – that connected Chaleur Bay and the Atlantic provinces to the rest of Canada. It houses authentic archives as well as an antique and craft shop. Hikers can follow the Kempt Road trail and make their way up to some now-closed villages, including Saint-Fidèle (closed in 1974). There they can explore the history of this old road and discover the village cemetery, which has been given a thorough make-over and is now a park commemorating the region’s pioneers.
