Shigawake Agricultural Fair and Music Festival
The English-speaking community has a long history and presence on the Gaspe Coast which began in the mid-1700s. The community’s English, Irish, Scottish, Channel Island and Loyalist (American colonists) roots have produced distinct traditions and customs. The community is fiercely attached to "the Coast" and loves to share its stories, culture, and heritage with visitors "from away".
One of the biggest events held in the community is the Annual Shigawake Fair and Music Festival - a celebration of talented musicians and local products, with family fun and activities.

Hello Meghan! It's truly a pleasure to meet you and learn more about a legendary event in the Chaleur Bay; the Shigawake Agricultural Fair and Music Festival. For those who aren’t familiar with this event, can you give us a little background information?
It is rooted in the love of music. Flourishing from the seed of an idea that my family - who are Anglophone - had who loves music, but rarely had access to live shows in their native language because of their ruralness. The first festival happened in 2009 as a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the agricultural fair (the fair runs in conjunction with the festival). At the time - it was meant to be a one-time event, but the community requested that it happen again. AND here we are this many years later!!
The hope was to create a festival in the region that would introduce the community to new music, but also to make the area known to the musicians as a viable touring market.
Bonjour Meghan!

We’ve heard that some festival-goers drive more than 10 hours to attend your event. What do you feel sets you apart?
The festival is a remarkably intimate event with the ability to remain very inclusive. The festival-goers quickly realized that this energy and atmosphere cannot be fabricated. The unique and natural ability to be this way creates the ultimate place to enjoy music and connect with each other. Each year the festival realizes its true gift and potential - making it one of the leading events in the area.
It has often been noted that the affordability of the event is a driving factor, but also the quality of musicianship and the casualness of the artists' interaction with the audience and with each other; there are often impromptu collaborations, which create a sense of spontaneity and inclusiveness. These are unique experiences that our audience looks forward to being part of.
