Discover this fishing heritage site: Dedicated to Sport Fishing in Québec

Dive into the captivating history of Atlantic salmon sport fishing, a tradition that has deeply shaped the identity of the La Matapédia sector in Gaspésie. This designated salmon fishing heritage site is unique in Québec, preserving the legacy of private fishing clubs that once attracted members of the international elite.

The adventure began in 1873 when Lord Mount Stephen, an influential Scottish businessman and key figure in Canadian history, acquired lands along the Matapedia and Causapscal rivers to pursue sport fishing. He transformed this land into a private estate, laying the foundation for a century-old tradition.

In the early 20th century, New York businessmen purchased the lands and established the sophisticated and exclusive Matamajaw Salmon Club. For over 60  years, this private fishing club welcomed prestigious members, offering them an unparalleled fishing experience amid the enchanting landscapes of the Gaspé Peninsula.

An immersive journey through history and nature

Today, the Matamajaw fishing heritage site invites you to relive this glorious era. Step into the past by visiting the permanent exhibition which showcases the fascinating history of sport fishing. Then go out to see the famous salmon pool, where you can observe majestic Atlantic salmon up close in their natural habitat.

This is a must-see site for nature lovers, history buffs and fishing enthusiasts!
