Percé Rock: An Iconic Natural Landmark

It is impossible to remain unmoved by the sight of Percé Rock.

Shaped by the elements, this giant limestone monolith transforms the landscape of Gaspésie all on its own. An iconic landmark, it captures the attention, fascinates and inspires awe. It is something you must see at least once in your lifetime.

The most magical time to see it is at sunrise, when the first light colours the arch, or at dusk, as the sky ignites above Mont Sainte-Anne. Even under snow and surrounded by icy water, Percé Rock is awe-inspiring.

Visible from nearly everywhere in the village of Percé, the rock dominates the landscape as a constant and familiar presence. It shares the scene with its neighbour, Bonaventure Island, another spectacular sight.

Did you know that Percé Rock once had several natural arches? Over the centuries, tides and erosion gradually changed its shape. The arch visible today is the only one remaining, a vestige of a time when there were as many as three. It is hard to tell from a distance, but the arch alone is 20 metres high, the equivalent of ten cars stacked on top of each other!

Formed about 375 million years ago, this limestone monument is within the boundaries of Parc national de l’Île-Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Percé, as is Bonaventure Island. Both are also located within the municipality of Percé, at the eastern tip of the Gaspé Peninsula.

A common question visitors ask is whether they can walk to Percé Rock. Unfortunately, this is strictly forbidden, even though a sandbar seems to lead you there at low tide. This restriction is for your own safety, given that the rock loses about 300 tonnes of stone every year, and it also helps to protect this unique and fragile natural environment.

You are invited instead to admire Percé Rock from a distance and visit it often. This landmark can be admired in every season, and each time you see it will offer you a new perspective and a different impression.

Enjoy Experiences around Percé Rock

A multitude of experiences are offered around Percé Rock, both on land and at sea.

Admire this behemoth from the trails leading to the summit of Mont Sainte-Anne or from a suspended glass platform, which also offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the coastline. You can also go on a boat trip to Bonaventure Island to see it from every angle, including from behind, which provides an unexpected yet equally striking perspective.

Another option is to take in the view from the boardwalk or beach in Percé, both of which offer stunning vantage points. You can also stay in the area and opt for a lodging establishment that offers a view of the rock—some places will even give you the opportunity to admire it as soon as you wake up. Finally, several local restaurants provide the perfect setting to enjoy a meal overlooking the sea and the rock.
