At the junction of the Matane and the St. Lawrence Rivers, one finds Matane, named from a Micmac expression meaning "beaver pond" where today's industries rely heavily on its natural resources. Matane's hospitality complements its urban, industrial, rural and heritage characteristics.
Downtown, discover Atlantic salmon fishing, or watch the salmon run at the observation centre. Close to the town hall, a walkway leads to the Parc des Îles where you can relax and enjoy several sports (supervised beach, paddleboat and kayak rental, mini-golf, paths for walking, biking and in-line skating, canoe, volleyball, basketball, mini outdoor gym, children's playgrounds). Also find picnic tables, play area and public art. The Complexe culturel Joseph-Rouleau combines the library and the Espace F gallery. The Promenade des Capitaines presents the story of the Matane maritime tradition.
Matane holds three Fleurons at the Fleurons du Québec's horticultural classification.
