Gaspésie Tour: Mountain Biking

Mountain biking enthusiasts: here’s a suggested 5-day itinerary in Gaspésie, combining several cycling destinations with great foodie spots.

Day 1 - The Sentiers de l’Igloo in Matane

Starting Point: Matane

Ride: The Sentiers de l’Igloo, managed by the Club de Vélo Éolien de Matane, offer approximately 35 km of forested Enduro and cross-country trails with minimal elevation gain (180 m). Don’t miss the recently developed Banjo trail, featuring jumps, turns, and a descent.

Eat: La Fabrique, a microbrewery and pub in downtown Matane, is a must-visit for delicious burgers.

Extend the fun: Mitis Distillery, Les Grottes de La Rédemption, Jardins de Métis, or a sea excursion with Destination Haute-Mer.

Logistical Details

Route and transportation: 1 hour from Sainte-Flavie to Matane (Sainte-Félicité), plus 1 extra hour for a round trip to La Rédemption.

Sleep: The friendly seaside youth hostel, Manoir des Sapins, is open year-round and features a seasonal café-crêperie—perfect for starting the day right!

Day 2 - The Bout du Monde trails in Gaspé

Starting Point: Sainte-Félicité

Ride: Continue the adventure on the Bout du Monde trails in Gaspé, offering 30 km of trails around Mont Béchervaise.

Eat: Bistro-Bar Le Brise Bise has two terraces—one overlooking Rue de la Reine and the other the Bay of Gaspé. Its legendary shrimp poutine is delicious, especially paired with a local microbrewery beer, like Pit Caribou from Percé.

Extend the fun: Forillon National Park, whale watching with Croisières Baie de Gaspé, zodiac or kayak with Cap Aventure, sea kayaking in Saint-Georges-de-Malbaie with Le Nordet, and the Gespeg Micmac Cultural Interpretation Site.

Logistical Details

Route and transportation:  2 hours from Matane to Murdochville, 1 hour to Gaspé, then 40 minutes to Percé (Coin-du-Banc).

Sleep: Camp de Base Gaspésie is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts! Just steps from a picturesque beach, this hostel with chalets is run by passionate cyclists. Various guided or self-guided activities are available: beach fatbiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, tasting exclusive local spirits, and more.

Day 3 – Station touristique Pin Rouge in New Richmond

Starting Point: Percé (Coin-du-Banc)

Ride: Station touristique Pin Rouge features 9 km of cross-country trails, including the Les Cèdres trail. From over 670 m, enjoy views of the Chic-Chocs and Chaleur Bay before descending through mature forests with fast turns and double jumps. On site, you’ll also find a pump track and skills course for the whole family to practice.

Eat: La Poissonnerie du pêcheur in Bonaventure is the ultimate spot for fresh fish and seafood! Located within a fish market, you can bring your own wine. Before dining, stock up on strawberry or rhubarb wine at Ferme Bourdages Tradition.

Extend the fun: Distillerie des Marigots, paddling down the clear Bonaventure River by canoe, kayak, or paddleboard with Cime Aventure, and the Paspébiac National Historic Site.

Logistical Details

Route and transportation: 2 hours 25 minutes from Percé (Coin-du-Banc) to New Richmond (Station touristique Pin Rouge), plus 40 minutes to return to Bonaventure.

Sleep: Colorful chalets await at the foot of the mountain at Station touristique Pin Rouge. Staying here allows you to explore more hiking and biking trails along the river and enjoy the pool.

Day 4 – Parc régional du Mont-Saint-Joseph in Carleton-sur-Mer

Starting Point: New Richmond

Ride: Parc régional du Mont-Saint-Joseph offers 20 km of cross-country and enduro trails. From the summit at 555 m, enjoy breathtaking views of Chaleur Bay. The Tracadigache loop trail, featuring a 22 m wooden wall platform, is a must. For beginners, visit the municipal park Germain-Deslauriers, which offers a dozen children’s modules by the sea. Open from June 1 to November 1.

Eat: Microbrewery Le Naufrageur serves a pub menu inspired by local products. Its terrace with a fireplace makes it the perfect post-ride spot.

Extend the fun: Miguasha National Park, catamaran excursions and kayak or paddleboard rentals with Écovoile to explore Chaleur Bay, striped bass fishing with Pêche sportive Baie-des-Chaleurs, and escape games at LilloJEUX.

Logistical Details

Route and transportation: 5 minutes from New Richmond (Station touristique Pin Rouge) to Carleton-sur-Mer; an additional 15 minutes to Nouvelle.

Sleep: In the heart of Carleton-sur-Mer, Auberg’Inn offers lofts, rooms, and apartments, plus floating yurts!

Day 5 – Parc régional de Val-d’Irène in Amqui

Starting Point: Carleton-sur-Mer

Ride: Parc régional de Val-d’Irène offers 15 km of cross-country and enduro trails. Rising to 685 m, the mountain provides panoramic views of Lake Matapédia. Descend the V-Line trail and test your skills on the many jumps.

Eat: Microbrewery and restaurant Le Ketch features a terrace with incredible sea views. Don’t miss the cod fritters, poutine, and nachos!

Extend the fun: Route des belvédères, Via Ferrata de la Chute à Philomène, Matamajaw Fishing Heritage Site, hiking and cycling at Parc régional du Lac-Matapédia, and La Vallée de la Framboise Économusée.

Logistical Details

Route and transportation: 1 hour 50 minutes from Carleton-sur-Mer to Sainte-Irène, then 45 minutes to Sainte-Flavie.
