Getting to Gaspésie
Gaspésie is a tourist region located in Eastern Québec, Canada, that is bordered by the region of Bas-Saint-Laurent as well as the St. Lawrence Estuary and Chaleur Bay.
To drive to Gaspésie, you can either take Highway 20, which ends in Mont-Joli, or Route 132, which follows the coast to Sainte-Flavie. This town is the gateway to the region and marks the beginning of the Gaspésie Tour, a spectacular 885-km scenic drive you can follow around the entire peninsula on Route 132.
Distances and Travel Times to Get to Gaspésie
From the north shore of the St. Lawrence, the Matane–Baie-Comeau–Godbout ferry will take you directly across the water to Gaspésie. Other ferries, including Trois-Pistoles–Les Escoumins, allow travellers to then follow Route 132 or Highway 20 to easily access the region.
From the Maritimes, routes 11 and 134 lead to the J.C. Van Horne Bridge in Campbellton, New Brunswick, which you can then cross to get to Pointe-à-la-Croix in Gaspésie. While driving is the most convenient way to explore the region, you can also fly or travel there by train or bus.

Can I travel to Gaspésie by train?
Yes, but only to certain sectors. From Montréal or Québec City, VIA Rail will take you all the way to Matapédia, with stops in Mont-Joli, Sayabec, Amqui and Causapscal, before continuing on to New Brunswick. Service at these stations and stops is limited, and trains pass through Gaspésie at night. To reach the rest of the region from Matapédia, you will need to travel by bus or drive.
There is no train service between Matapédia and Gaspé nor any along the northern side of the peninsula.
Can I fly to Gaspésie?
Yes. Flights are available from various airports throughout the province of Québec to Mont-Joli, Gaspé and Bonaventure. Travellers coming from outside Québec, including the Maritimes, will have to book a connecting flight through Montréal or Québec City.

Pascan Aviation offers flights to Gaspé and Bonaventure.
Chrono Aviation offers private flights from Montréal, Québec City and Rimouski.
Once you are in Gaspésie, you can rent a car at the Gaspé Airport. If you fly into Mont-Joli or Bonaventure, you can arrange a rental through a nearby agency.
Are flights to Gaspésie eligible for Québec government discounts?
Yes. The airports in Gaspésie are all included in the Regional Air Access Program (PAAR), which applies to flights within Québec. This program replaces the $500 ticket offer launched in 2022.
Can I travel to Gaspésie by bus?
Yes. Orléans Express buses depart from Ottawa, Montréal and Québec City and arrive in Gaspésie via Mont-Joli. From there, two routes are available, one via the northern side of the peninsula and the other via the southern side. These routes allow you to tour the entire Gaspé Peninsula by bus while stopping in about 20 towns along the way.
For travellers coming from the Maritimes, Maritime Bus provides a connection with Orléans Express, notably in Campbellton, New Brunswick, and Rivière-du-Loup, in Bas-Saint-Laurent.
Can I travel to Gaspésie by ferry?
Yes. Several ferries provide access to the region:
Matane–Baie-Comeau–Godbout: This ferry operates year-round. The crossing takes about 2.5 hours. In the winter, you can board with your snowmobile. Reservations are strongly recommended.
Trois-Pistoles–Les Escoumins and Rivière-du-Loup–Saint-Siméon (seasonal): These ferries will take you from the north shore of the St. Lawrence to Bas-Saint-Laurent. You will then have to take Route 132 or Highway 20 to get to Gaspésie.
Can I drive to Gaspésie in the winter?
Yes. Snow removal services allow you to drive to and around Gaspésie throughout the winter season.
Before setting off, be sure to check current road conditions by visiting the Québec 511 website. If a road section is closed due to poor conditions, it is best to postpone your trip. Caution is always advised even when there is no chance of precipitation since strong winds can sometimes reduce visibility to nearly zero.
Can I go on a cruise that stops in Gaspésie?
Yes. Some cruise lines offer cruises on the St. Lawrence that include a stop in Gaspé. Check with your travel agency to learn about available options.
Can I travel to the Îles de la Madeleine from Gaspésie?
No. There is no direct ferry between the two regions. The only ferry to the Îles de la Madeleine departs from Prince Edward Island. For up-to-date information, consult the Tourisme Îles de la Madeleine website.
Although the administrative region is called “Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine,” the two are distinct tourist regions.
